Commerce secretary supports the extension of the presidential proclamation.
Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo has announced that tariffs on Ukrainian steel will be suspended for an additional year. The United States imposed a 25 percent ad valorem tax on steel imports from all countries except Canada and Mexico in 2018 in order to strengthen national security.
However, steel is one of Ukraine’s primary industries, which was hit hard by Russia’s attack against the country. President Biden first suspended the tariff in 2022 to help industry workers maintain their jobs through the time of war.
“Over the last year, the United States has provided a much-needed market for the steel that Ukraine is able to export. In doing so, Americans are directly supporting the people of Ukraine, many of whom rely on Ukraine’s steel industry for their economic well-being,” said Secretary Raimondo. “Today’s announcement is a signal to the Ukrainian people that our commitment to them remains unwavering in the face of Russia’s aggression.”
